Once heard in over 19 markets and 3 countries, the show reaches out to hip-hop listeners across the world. 11 million people tuned in weekly to “WAKE UP!” to underground music and culture that the mainstream wasn’t aware of. Based out of the Bay Area, King Tech launched the show on the #1 radio station in northern California 106 KMEL. Tech wasn’t alone, he brought along his friend/business partner Sway to co-host. Throughout the years the show had a slew of contributors. What makes the Wake Up Show special is the genuine love for hip-hop culture as a whole. DJing, B-boying, Graffiti and MCing are all elements represented in the show.
In July 1994, The Wake Up Show moved to Los Angeles and began simulcasting to KMEL San Fran and later to WEJM Chicago. By 1996, DJ Revolution joined the team and the Wake Up Show team became complete. Rev brought a new type of firepower and passion for DJing. During the 1990s, coast to coast, the nation was tuning in to the “Wake Up Show” in record numbers. Some of the artists that have been on the Wake Up Show include Kanye West, Common, Kendrick Lamar, Danny Brown, Earl Sweatshirt, Wu-Tang Clan, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Xzibit, KRS One. Eminem, Rakim, Goodie Mobb, The Fugees, Outkast, Jay Z, Nas and Big Pun. The list reads like the hip-hop hall of fame. Artist and listeners all know– that no matter how rich and famous you become you still have to display a high level lyrical skills to get respect on this show. Sway and King Tech have always had a goal to bring the most authentic hip-hop show to the radio airways around the world. The Wake Up Shows reoccurring segments continues to entice s the listeners to tune in. “Freestyle Battles” have always kept the Mc’s honest and as a result some of the Hip Hops most legendary battles have been heard on the Wake Up Show; Supernatural vs Juice and Hieroglyphics vs Hobo Junction included. The “Demo of the Week” segment gives an opportunity to up and coming artist to be heard on a global platform. At the beginning of his career Eminem was an artist that reaped the benefit of having his early music played on the show. Wake Up Show listeners were the first audience to hear unreleased tracks from Jay Z, DJ Quik, Tech N9ne, Nas, The Roots, The Boot Camp Click and Slick Rick. They also heard tracks that came straight out of the producer’s studio, like the legendary Dj/producer Clark Kent, DJ Premier, and P Diddy. The Wake Up Show has always been dedicated to the audience. The show is now ready to enter its next phase and bringing their followers with them.
Today, the “Wake Up Show” is heard weekly on XM/Sirius Radio 8pm est, on Shade 45 nationally. The show continues its effort to bring new artists and new talent on a global scale to the forefront of Hip Hop culture and provide a forum to break their latest and greatest hits. The show is also experimenting with new ways to bring the audience closer to all the action. As we have entered the visual age, the show is making a giant leap forward by launching the “Wake Up Show UnPlugged”. This will be featured via “wakeupshow.com” website and the WakeUpShow YouTube Channel. Now the world can experience and witness the great events of hip hop culture as they unfold.
